Fortinet’s Fortiguard team  has released details of its malware report for September indicating  over 60% of total activity comes from one culprit as rogue security applications sweep the top four positions of this month’s top ten. The rogue security application family (RogueSecurity) was added this month, and the accumulated results for all of its variants was astounding: 61.5% of total reported malware belonged to the RogueSecurity family.

Cybercriminals are deploying sophisticated techniques looking to make a quick and lucrative buck from bogus security applications. Not since the start of this year when the notorious Storm virus made a continuous run of devastating attacks has any comparison been seen with this level of activity, however where the Rogue security applications excel is the accumulated volume: maintaining these extreme levels of activity for at least six days, not to mention the other variants.
